The shot initially is out of focus, no? I think you probably tried to inverse the effect by making the rest of the image blurry so the eyes give the illusion of sharpness. Good thinking. Babies are difficult to capture because they move so much. Ideally you should photograph them in a light that makes it more "happy" - so next time try to shoot using a window or simply outdoors.
